Is there a more permanent fix to this? That is, how can I start using octave without invoking the GUI instead of the CLI?

My fix was to create a permanent alias in ~/.bash_profilewhich was alias octave='octave -no-gui'. The Octave GUI looks quite unappealing (on a mac, at least) so I wanted to use the command line interface. In Waveform (dB) view view only - Hold Ctrl (⌘ on Mac)and Shift and rotate the mouse wheel to vary the lower dB limit of the scale at the same zoom level, irrespective of the limit set at "Meter dB range" in Tracks Preferences.

Hold Ctrl (⌘ on Mac) and rotate the mouse wheel to zoom in or out at the mouse pointer's position.Opening the Presence gui showed that the Octave I was auditioning on the Edit piano roll was outside of the range shown on the instrument gui but (with the exception of the tuning anomaly) Presence seems quite happy to be playing in the higher octave range, in fact I discovered something I hadn't noticed before in that I could slide my mouse up.Octave helps in solving linear and nonlinear problems numerically, and for performing other numerical experiments using a language that is mostly compatible with.
